Ticks are bad this year! What you can do to protect your pets

June 16th, 2015 Posted in Uncategorized

Tick season in Ontario is usually between April and October. The most common ticks seen in Ontario are Dermacentor (American Dog Tick) and Ixodes (Black Legged Deer Tick). Deer Ticks can transmit Lyme disease.

Options for Tick Control:

1/ K9 ADVANTIX:

K9 Advantix is also made by the Bayer Corporation and contains both imidacloprid and permethrin. K9 Advantix kills and repels mosquitoes and ticks and stops fleas from biting in 5 minutes and kills fleas within one hour.
Hopefully, with a name like K9 Advantix it’s obvious that this product is only to be used on dogs, NEVER apply this product to cats.
Advantix is a once a month topical that can be used on dogs and puppies as young as 7 weeks. Cat owners must be careful because it can kill cats. If you have cats in your household I would strongly advise using a different preventative on your dog.

2/ BRAVECTO:

New in 2015, Bravecto is an oral medication (chewable tablet) that lasts 12 weeks, with protection against both ticks and fleas. We can order some for you, if you want to try Bravecto. It comes in one tablet and two tablet packages but the 2 tablet packages are the best value and what we recommend for optimal protection. It should be applied in the spring and then again in the late summer or early fall, two doses given 3 months apart.

3/ REVOLUTION:

Revolution is manufactured by Pfizer Animal Health. The active ingredient is selamectin. This is a once a month treatment that is applied between the shoulder blades. Revolution works to protect dogs against heartworms, fleas, flea eggs, ear mites, sarcoptic mange, and the American dog tick. Revolution works to protect cats against heartworms, fleas, flea eggs, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms. Revolution can be used on dogs and cats as young as 6 weeks of age.
Revolution DOES NOT WORK AS WELL as other tick preventatives, because IT TAKES UP TO 5 DAYS to kill the tick. Given that Lyme disease-causing germs can be transmitted long before then, that’s too long!

4/ OVITROL PLUS
This flea spray contains pyrethrins. It is safe for dogs and cats. Use it once or twice weekly to repel and kill both ticks and fleas.
