Hairballs in cats is not a disease

November 27th, 2016 Posted in Uncategorized

Some cats vomit fur from time to time. This is not a rare thing.
However, did you know that Hairballs are not a disease or a condition? They’re a SYMPTOM.

What causes cats to vomit fur?

Hairballs can be seen as a result of two situations:

1. Where there is an increase in the intake of hair due to:

Increased grooming due to skin problems/irritation
Excessive grooming due to a behavioural issue eg anxiety
Additional hair being shed during seasonal changes (especially long haired cats)

2. When there is a problem moving the hair through the gastrointestinal tract associated with the following:

Motility disorders
Inflammatory bowel disease

Please don’t assume vomiting furballs is normal for cats. It is not.
The occasional hairball is probably not a cause for concern, but if your cat vomits more than once a week, a visit to the vet is definitely indicated!
